ITaRS fellow in Warsaw
by Xinxin Li
On the 23rd and 24th of April 2014, ITaRS fellow Xinxin Li participated in the WP22 Progress Workshop of 3rd Aerosols, Clouds, and Trace gases Research InfraStructure Network (ACTRIS) at the University of Warsaw, Poland. She presented her work "Analysis of CCN activity of ambient aerosol and aerosol-cloud interaction at Jülich ObservatorY for Cloud Evolution site. Nine participants from Poland, the Netherlands, Ireland, and Germany joined the meeting. The workshop focused on case studies of aerosol-cloud-interaction and discussed approaches and techniques used to derive aerosol and cloud microphysical properties. Recommendations on standardizing retrieval algorithms and instrument calibrations were proposed and summarized in the end of the workshop.
ITaRS fellows at MIRA Workshop
The ITaRS fellows Claudia Acquistapace, Pilar Gumà-Claramunt and Alexander Myagkov participated in the first MIRA Millimetre Cloud Radar Workshop, hosted by the Meteorological Institute of the Ludwig Maximilians University (LMU) in Munich on 14th and 15th May 2014. The aim of the workshop was to bring together experts working with cloud radars in order to share knowledge and discuss about different topics related to the instrument (such as sensitivity and calibration procedures) and data processing (i.e. the usefulness of iQ data, the MIRA software and the data formats used). The schedule also included a rooftop tour to see the instruments of the Meteorological Institute.
HygrA-CD start-up workshop
by Athina Argyrouli, Maria Barrera Verdejo, Lev Labzovsky, Ioannis Binietoglou and Robert Banks
On May 13th, the start-up workshop for HygrA-CD campaign has been held in the National Technical University of Athens. The ESR12, Athina Argyrouli, gave an introductory presentation on the objectives of HygrA-CD and the several synergies of remote sensing instruments, in-situ instruments and meteorological models. The ITaRS fellows, Maria Barrera Verdejo, Lev Labzovsky and Ioannis Binietoglou attended the workshop and presented their scientific goals with respect to the campaign. In addition, ESR13 Robert Banks gave a talk about his contribution to HygrA-CD through an e-learning platform which has been offered to be used within ITaRS network by TUDelft. The agenda of this event can be found here.
ESR7 at TROPOS
The secondment to the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) in Leipzig was a like a trip “back to the roots” for me.
Since I left the city, after five years of studying there, this Secondment gave me the possibility to get back to Leipzig to study again. So I was quite happy about the given opportunity to learn about lidar data processing from the lidar experts of my former working group.
